One of the most popular PA attractions in north central PA is located in Tioga County PA. If you’ve never been here, you’ll want to put this on your must see places in Pennsylvania.
The Tioga State Forest surrounds the canyon, and the views are stunning.
October is a nice time to visit as the leaves are changing and the weather isn’t as warm and humid as it is over the summer.
It definitely makes it easier if you want to hike to the bottom of the canyon and then hike back up to the top. If you do visit in the summer, it’s still a nice hike, although you’ll want to be prepared with how you dress.
The canyon is 47 miles long and the deepest part of the canyon is at the southern end at 1,450 feet.
You can hike to the bottom of the canyon and back. The trail is steep so be prepared with proper shoes, insect repellent, long sleeves or a jacket.
It’s a good idea to carry a bottle of water for each person planning to hike the trail, especially when the weather is warmer.
We hiked to the bottom of the canyon, and it is definitely a workout. Especially when you are climbing back up the trail. But seeing the canyon from top to bottom is definitely recommended!
But if you’re able, it’s very nice to actually be at the bottom of the canyon to look around.
You get a very different perspective once you’re down below. Look for different birds and wildlife at the bottom.
Colton Point State Park and Leonard Harrison State Park offer overlooks for great views. Don’t forget to have your camera ready!
Birdwatchers will want to be on the lookout for a variety of birds. Don’t forget your binoculars! We saw some gorgeous birds when we were there.
Camping is available April to October and includes group tenting and rustic tenting.
There are some sites that have electricity and sanitation.
Snowmobile and cross country ski trails are open in the winter.
The area is breathtaking after a snow fall. Take advantage of getting out to see the pristine snow hugging the tree branches.
During the summer various trails offer biking, hiking and horseback riding.
The Canyon is in Wellsboro PA.
Enjoy your trip to PA’s majestic canyon!
