Pennsylvania Weather and Seasons

Pennsylvania weather changes throughout the year.

The state experiences the four seasons of the year with snow, autumn scenery, spring showers and hot summers.

Autumn

Those wishing to experience the beauty of the leaves changing colors in the Pennsylvania mountains should visit the state at the beginning – and through the middle of – October.

Colors vary year by year depending on how much or how little rain we’ve had.

You can see leaves with colors of orange, yellow, gold, red, and brown dotting the mountains and tree lined roads.

Bring a camera to capture the beauty of the state and the autumn paradise.

Winter

Some Pennsylvanians look forward to the first day of winter (usually December 21 or 22 in the US) others do not!

Skiers look forward to getting out on the slopes at one of the many ski resorts across the state.

While snow fall varies each year and throughout the state, PA usually gets a white winter wonderland a few times each winter that covers the ground.

The snow on the ground and the tree branches creates quite a beautiful picture. So don’t forget your camera if you visit the state on a ski getaway!

The Lake Erie (northwest) area of the state can get a few feet of snow if we have a major snowfall.

The Laurel Highlands including the Johnstown/State College/Altoona areas have also been hit with a foot or more of snow at certain times.

The Poconos and Philadelphia can also get a lot of snow, it all depends on which way the storm front is heading.

Sometimes eastern PA will get a foot of snow and western PA only gets a few inches and vice versa. Pennsylvania weather is unpredictable!

Depending on the weather pattern for that winter season, PA has also had mild winters where we do not get any major snowfall at all.
