The house is named after William Searight and sat on the former National Road which is now US Rte 40. Tolls ceased being collected in 1905.

The National Road was instituted by the federal government in an effort to connect the east and west parts of the country together. Each state maintained that portion of the road which passed through it by collecting tolls.

Searights is one of the original 6 toll houses that were erected. Only 1 other one is still standing.
